Getting started with care at home

A clearer first step.

Start with your everyday life, rather than a service label.

Think about the difference support could make

Consider the routines you want to maintain and the tasks that have become more difficult. This might include preparing meals, personal care, companionship or getting out and about.

Involve the person receiving care

Where possible, make time to talk about their wishes, preferences and concerns. Decide who they would like involved in conversations with a provider.

Ask about your local options

Contact a local team with your postcode, a short outline of your needs and any timing preferences. Availability and suitability need to be discussed individually.

Discuss assessment and care planning

Ask what happens during the assessment, how a plan is agreed and how support is reviewed if your needs change.

This guide provides general information about exploring care. Individual care arrangements depend on an assessment and discussion with your chosen provider.
